Variable speeds for better shaving, Heusch says

After extensive tests, the company found that instead of using fixed speeds for the wheel it supplies to grind the blades in fleshing and shaving machines, variable speeds improve the shaving process more.
“Shaving is an important operation in leather production,” Heusch said on revealing the results of its tests. “End consumers insist on perfect optical and haptic characteristics. Shoe manufacturers working with newest technology such as direct soling require even leather thickness. Automotive and aircraft leather has to be light in weight.”
It said that, owing to wear, the diameter of the grinding wheel shrinks during usage and, according to the company, this is the main cause of blades becoming blunt, causing marks and differences in leather thickness, which tanners want to avoid.
The newest shaving machines on the market use frequency inverters in the grinding wheel motor to solve this problem but older machines don’t have this feature. According to Heusch’s tests upgrading these machines with frequency inverters for “a relatively low investment” will make it possible for leather manufacturers to achieve big improvements in the shaving process.
