Environmental footprint online tool ready use

COTANCE, the leather industry’s representative body in the European Union, has announced that an online tool to help tanners calculate the carbon footprint of the material they produce is now ready for use.

In April 2018, product environmental footprint category rules (PEFCR) that COTANCE and its partners, most notably Italian tanning industry association UNIC, put together won official recognition from the European Commission as the method for calculating the environmental footprint of leather.

This only came about after five years’ painstaking work, which shows that the rules are complex. For that reason, the European Commission agreed to help convert the new rules into a simple-to-use online tool to make it easy for even small leather manufacturers to calculate the environmental footprint of their leather.

In its September 2019 newsletter, COTANCE said: “The tool is finally ready to use.” Details of how and when tanners can start using it will come in the coming months.

The European Commission’s aim is to establish what it calls “a single market for green products”. Owing to debate about what does and does not constitute a green product, it then launched the exercise of deciding on rules, the PEFCR. Having successfully completed its work on the PEFCR for leather, COTANCE has secured a place for the industry in this green products market. “The European leather industry is moving forward, taking responsibility and being transparent,” it said in the newsletter.
