Kimono-dyeing techniques catch the eye
A small group of Japanese exhibitors at the September 2019 edition of Mipel in Milan attracted substantial attention owing to the quality and visual appeal of the products they had on display.

Something that particularly caught the eye of visitors was the effect on some of the leathergoods on display from the six Japanese brands that attended of dyeing techniques that emulate those used in the production of traditional kimonos.

Applying hot steam to the material during dyeing seemed to have served, in the case of Etoile Kaito’s Yumeshisyu brand, to puff up the leather, giving it extra volume but no extra weight (see image). The brand’s offering included small purses and glasses-cases made from puffed-up pigskin, dyed in natural, earthy colours using the kimono technique.
