Ubrique talent on show at Mipel

A delegation from Ubrique, the small, southern Spanish town that has kept its leathergoods manufacturing traditions flourishing, had a spacious stand at September’s edition of Mipel in Milan.

With the support of the regional government of Andalusia, a Made in Ubrique project group set up a combined stand to promote the town’s talent. A number of individual Ubrique-based brands, such as Colourfield, had separate stands too.

María Monleón, who is from Castellón in eastern Spain but moved south to Ubrique four years ago, was present at Mipel in her capacity as international consultant to the Made in Ubrique project. She said brands from different parts of Europe, including the Netherlands and Ireland, had discovered  Ubrique after finding it difficult and expensive to set up outsource leathergoods manufacturing partnerships in Italy.

She explained that, with its own dedicated leather craftsmanship school, generations of know-how and a commitment to using up-to-date technology such as advanced printing techniques, Ubrique’s future is bright.
