Brazil-based packer and leather manufacturer Marfrig is to increase the workforce at its meat packing plant in Promissão, in the state of São Paulo, by 400.

It said on making the announcement that this growth is the result of an increase in demand for its meat in China.

Marfrig has 11 meat plants that qualify to export meat to China. Five of these are in Brazil, including plants at Tangará da Serra and Várzea Grande, both in Mato Grosso, which recently received clearance to ship meat to China. Four Marfrig plants in Uruguay also qualify, as do two in Argentina.

Its chief executive for South American operations, Miguel Gularte, said at the time of the announcement: “We are the company with the largest number of plants equipped for shipping meat to China from South America. This proves our operational efficiency and will allow us to ship more product to that market.”
