Meat prices up 12% since the start of the year
05/09/2019
In its latest Meat Price Index report, the FAO said prices rose by almost one point in August to reach almost 180. The index records the average prices around the world of beef, chicken, pork and lamb or mutton month by month and compares them to the average for figures for the period between 2002 and 2004. Those 2002-2004 figures give a base of 100.
FAO said strong demand for pork in China, as a result of domestic supply problems following an outbreak of African Swine Fever, had underpinned an increase that has taken prices 12.3% higher than at the start of 2019.
