African Swine Fever has cost China 100 million pigs so far

A CNN report on September 4 said African Swine Fever has led to the slaughter of more than 100 million pigs in China in the last 12 months.

Quoting figures from China’s ministry of agriculture, CNN said the slaughter figure between July 2018 and February 2019 was 1 million. By July 2019, this had increased to more than 100 million.

UN Food and Agriculture Organisation figures put China’s live pig population at 440 million in 2017.

As a result, wholesale pork prices in late August were 90% higher than a year earlier.
