Tanner says luxury group backing is essential

The owner of an independent tannery in Alsace in eastern France has said the possible purchase of the business by luxury group Chanel would be a way of assuring its future.

In comments to local media, Nicolas Degermann said nothing to dispel talk that Chanel is poised to add Barr-based Tannerie Degermann to the growing list of leather manufacturers it has acquired in recent years.

Chanel bought Italian company Conceria Samanta in July this year, Catalan double-face producer Colomer and Tanneries Haas in 2018, and small skins tanneries Mégisserie Richard in 2016 and Bodin Joyeux in 2013.

“The market has changed,” Mr Degermann told Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace. “To have a future, it’s essential to have one of the luxury groups behind you.”
