Bangladesh: hide and skin prices steady for Eid al-Adha
08/08/2019
At this festival, Muslim communities slaughter cows, sheep or goats, use some of the meat for a celebratory meal and give some of it away to the poor. In Muslim-majority Bangladesh, tanners have estimated that around 75% of the local raw material that will become available to them in an entire year comes onto the market during the days of this festival.
Because the government recognises the need, for public health reasons, to collect the millions of hides and skins quickly, it has traditionally given support to tanners to help them acquire, preserve and part-process the material.
The agreed price for cowhides will be around $0.55 per square-foot in the capital, Dhaka, and $0.45 per square-foot in other parts of the country.
