Extra funding for USHLSA in the wake of China dispute

US secretary of agriculture, Sonny Perdue, has awarded extra funding of $100 million to 48 different organisations across the agricultural sector to help them promote their products and identify and access new export markets.

The extra funding, which will come through an initiative called the Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP), will include $700,000 for the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA).

This money is in addition to a shared $200 million in ATP funding that the US government announced at the start of 2019, from which USHSLA received more than $1.3 million.

In May, in light of the ongoing trade dispute with China, President Trump authorised the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide up to $16 billion in programmes to support farmers. This figure is in line with the estimated impact of tariffs that China is imposing on US agricultural goods and other areas of trade. ATP is one of three programmes aimed at assisting agricultural producers.

“China and other nations haven’t played by the rules for a long time,” Mr Perdue said on making the announcement, “and President Trump is standing up to them, sending a clear message that the US will no longer tolerate their unfair trade practices. At USDA, we are always looking to expand existing markets or open new ones and this infusion of money will do just that.”
