Artificial materials will dominate at poorly named Leatherworld

There will be around 60 exhibitors, but few will represent the leather industry; in spite of the show’s name, the organiser appears eager to emphasise that many participating companies will have artificial materials on display instead.
President of Messe Frankfurt France, Michael Scherpe, said he was pleased there will be a strong group of exhibitors from South Africa again, after ten took part in the September 2018 event. These exhibitors will be truer to the event’s name, showing leather and finished leathergoods.
However, Mr Scherpe also said: “This trade show reflects current trends and is open to all flexible materials, animal-based and artificial ones.” He added that China, which he described as the main supplier to brands in France and Germany of alternatives to leather will be represented by “a large number of firms”.
Presenting the September 2019 edition of the event, Messe Frankfurt said: “The demands from ready-to-wear labels to limit use of animal-based materials have accelerated development of synthetic or bio-based materials. Leatherworld wanted to shed a different light on these related products, which represent innovative alternatives to conventional [leather].”
