UK designer takes animals from field to product

Leather UK has highlighted the work of a graduate designer who has developed accessory collections that are said to make use of all parts of a single animal.

Alice Robinson studied the Fashion Accessory Course at London’s Royal College of Art. Her Master’s degree focused directly on the UK meat industry and, in turn, on leather.

Her first collection followed the journey of sheep 11458, which was purchased from a farmer in Shropshire. She used the vegetable-tanned skins and the spun wool, aiming to ensure there was no waste. The meat was served at the presentation of the collection.

She then worked on a separate one from Bullock 374. It is currently on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘FOOD: Bigger than the Plate’ exhibition. Her work will then tour for two further years.

Mr Robinson’s next project will focus on the ostrich. She is also exploring a venture with sheep farmers in Cornwall.
