Footwear suffers as consumption across Argentina’s economy declines
19/06/2019
Figures compiled by Buenos Aires-based consultancy IES Consultores suggest production levels of 31 million pairs in the June-April period in 2019. One year earlier, in the same months, Argentinean shoe factories produced 35 million pairs.
Showing that consumption across the whole of the Argentinean economy is slow, IES also said imports of footwear are down, with 7.6 million pairs coming into the country in the four-month period this year, compared to 12.3 million pairs in the same months in 2018, a fall of 38%.
In terms of value, shoe imports in the first four months were worth $136 million, down by more than 40% year on year. Footwear imports from Brazil contributed more than 30% of this total, Vietnam 25% and China 20%.
