Toyota eyes Myanmar’s expanding automotive market

04/06/2019
Automotive group Toyota has said it will establish its first vehicle production company in Myanmar, where from February 2021 it will produce its Hilux pickup truck for the local market.

The company currently imports the Hilux model into Myanmar to be sold, but it will establish Toyota Myanmar Co. (TMY) in order to boost its offering in what it sees as a growing automotive market.

The new plant will be located in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, which is located in the southern suburbs of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. It will build approximately 2,500 Hilux vehicles there per year from 2021. Total investment in the plant is expected to be $52.6 million and it will employ around 130 people.
