At an event in Brussels on May 22, the European Livestock and Meat Trades Union (UECBV) said farewell to Jean-Luc Mériaux. Mr Mériaux is retiring after serving as secretary-general of UECBV since 1980.

Dr Karsten Maier is replacing him as the new secretary-general of the organisation. Dr Maier is a specialist in agronomy and economics with more than 25 years’ experience of working in associations for industry and agriculture.

Commenting on Dr Maier’s appointment, UECBV vice-president, Margaret Boanas, said the organisation is confident he can work with member companies, European Union institutions and other stakeholders to address the challenges facing the meat sector in Europe. Among these challenges, she listed civil society’s expectation of food, supply security, trade globalisation and the competitiveness of European meat, and research and innovation in the increased sustainability and efficiency of the meat industry.
