Alan Abrahams has died

01/05/2019
We regret to announce that a dear friend and colleague, Alan Abrahams, died on May 1 in Hong Kong. He was well loved by everyone at World Leather and by people from all parts of the industry. He was 77.

Although in frail health for the last few years of his life owing to illness, Alan had been an energetic visitor to leather industry shows in different parts of Asia. He wrote articles and worked on commercial deals for World Leather and helped host Tannery of the Year finals in Hong Kong and Shanghai. He was also an important contributor to the work of the APLF team in the build-up to the exhibition in Hong Kong each year.

Alan Abrahams lived in Hong Kong for decades but was born and grew up in England. His parents were the sprinter Harold Abrahams, who won the gold medal for the 100 metres at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, and actress and singer Sybil Evers. The lives of his mother and his father featured prominently in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, which won four Oscars the following year. Alan was proud of this distinction and talked often of assistance that the family gave to the makers of the film.
