01/05/2019
New figures from the Department of Agriculture show that, on April 1, the US had 12 million cattle and calves on feed.

This put the inventory of cattle and calves that are ready for slaughter at 2% above the figure for April 1, 2018. USDA went further, saying this year’s figure is the highest April 1 inventory since records began in 1996.

Steers and steer calves accounted for 62% of the overall inventory, but at just under 7.5 million head, the total number of male animals was down by 1% year on year. In contrast, the figure for heifers and heifer calves was up by 8% compared to 12 months earlier at 4.5 million head.
