Leather Pipeline: automotive leather mystery
30/04/2019
According to the report, there is something of a mystery at the moment over what is happening in the automotive leather market.
For years, automotive has been one of the few leather-consuming markets that have remained healthy, in the face of a downturn in demand elsewhere. So far, though, 2019 has been more challenging for automotive leather manufacturers.
At the start of this year, tanners spoke of an expected increase in demand for automotive leather in the second quarter of 2019, but the new Leather Pipeline report makes it clear that this has not yet manifested itself.
It says this is a surprise because car companies have said nothing to cast doubt on their commitment to maintaining 2018 levels of production this year. For that to happen, they will need to increase the production of cars in the second half of 2019.
Hope remains, therefore, of a pick-up in demand for automotive leather in the second half of the year.
