India’s leather exports down in value, despite growth for leathergoods

The Indian leather industry earned export revenue of $4.75 billion in the first ten months of last financial year, April 2018 – January 2019, down by 1.1% on the same months a year earlier.

According to the country’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE), finished leather exports fell in value by 14.2% to $631.25 million, footwear components by 3% to US $272.1 million and leather garments by 8.8% to $413.9 million.

More positively, leather footwear exports rose in value by just under 1% to $1.8 billion, while those of leathergoods were up by 3.7% to almost $1.2 billion. There was also growth for equestrian leather exports, with an increase in value of 4.2%, reaching $133.7 million.
