European leather handbags face US “extra import duties”
24/04/2019
This dispute, which has been running since 2004, centres on complaints from the US about subsidies that it said aircraft manufacturer Airbus had received from four EU member states, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. And because of what it refers to as “inconsistencies” in the way the WTO has handled this matter, the US is now “determining the level of countermeasures” it will take.
Among the imports from the EU that the US government is proposing to subject to “extra import duties” are leather handbags with a value greater than $20. And although the original dispute was over the alleged actions of only four EU countries, the extra tariffs on leather handbags would apply to products made in any of the EU’s 28 member states.
The US government has opened a public consultation on the proposed countermeasures, inviting written comments by May 28.
