Japanese automotive strength prompts trade talks

While the US’s attempts to lower its trade deficit with China continue, it has already initiated discussions aimed at reducing the imbalance in its economic relations with Japan too.

Japan’s trade minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, travelled to Washington DC for initial talks on April 14 and 15, ahead of a likely meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Donald Trump later in the month.

According to Reuters, President Trump has made it clear he wants the US’s trade deficit with Japan, currently $69 billion per year, to come down. However, it quoted Mr Motegi as saying he would, naturally, argue in Japan’s interest during the talks.

Automotive exports from Japan account for almost two-thirds of the country’s trade surplus with the US.
