Fall in hide price fails to stimulate demand

In remarks at a press conference on March 14 at the 2019 APLF exhibition in Hong Kong, the director of the company that organises the event, Michael Duck, provided figures to highlight the changes that have occurred in hide prices in the last two years.

“At this juncture in 2017,” Mr Duck said, “Texas steer hide prices were $80 per piece. By this time last year, 2018, they had fallen to approximately $55 and are currently trading at $33.”

This means a decline in the price of Texas steer hide of close to 60% in two years.

But he said lower prices for hides have failed to stimulate increased demand for finished leather, especially for shoe uppers.
