Chinese tanners spent 25% less on imported raw material last year

Tanners contributed $18.7 billion towards this total and produced 500 million square-metres of leather in the course of the year. These figures represent an increase of 5.5% in value, but a decrease of more than 20% in volume.
Imports of hides and skins for processing in Chinese tanneries last year fell by 10.5% in volume and by 25.5% in value. China’s tanners spent just over $1.6 billion on imported raw material in 2018.
Export revenues for the leather sector as a whole were flat at just under $80 billion.
