French leather sector registers positive balance of trade for 2018

On releasing the figures for 2018, France’s national leather industry body, the Conseil National du Cuir (CNC), said that, faced with a decline in domestic sales, its tanners and finished product brands put high levels of energy into boosting their export sales.
Their efforts bore fruit; French leather industry exports had a value of €11.7 billion in 2018, an increase of 10% compared to the previous year’s figures.
Leather-sector imports had a total value of €10.7 billion, which represents a fall of 8% year on year.
CNC said the main reason for this shift was that imports tended to be dominated by lower-value footwear, bags and gloves, while exports were dominated by high-end luxury leathergoods of very high value.
