US cattle inventory report suggests no slowdown in hide supply

05/03/2019
The US Department of Agriculture has said in its latest cattle inventory report that the country’s cattle population, encompassing all cattle and calves, stood at 94.8 million head at the start of 2019. This is very slightly up on the figure at the same time in 2018.

Feedlots across the US had 14.4 million cattle and calves on feed at the start of this year, a 2% increase on the figure at the same time last year.

This shows that the supply of hides, which appears already to be running too high for tanners’ current requirements, is unlikely to slow in the coming months.
