Cattle shortage means beef prices on the rise in Argentina

04/03/2019
Consumers in Argentina have experienced a sharp rise in beef prices since the start of 2019.

Official prices at the end of January included US$5.75 for flank steak, 50% higher than the price at the start of 2018.

Industry commentators have said that, in the past when prices have gone up, livestock farmers have hurried cattle to market to take advantage of the increases and the extra volume has, in due course, brought prices back down again.

In 2019, this is not happening because too few cattle are ready for market, an indication, observers have said, of how economically difficult the market has become for farmers.
