Mexico’s car production undaunted by NAFTA change
Amendments to the North American Free Trade Agreement, which changed its name to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) on September 30, appear to have had no lasting effect on the Mexican automotive industry.

Official figures for January, published by AMIA, the Mexican Automotive Industry Association, show that passenger vehicle production for the month increased by 9.9% to reach 333,677 vehicles.

Of these, 111,212 were sold in Mexico itself, an increase of 1.8% compared to January 2018. Exports of 242,299 vehicles represented an increase of almost 5%.

More than 85% of Mexico’s exports of passenger vehicles went to its two USMCA partners. The US imported more than 190,000, an increase of 6.7% year on year. Around 18,500 went to Canada, a rise of 8.1%.
