Delvaux prepares to celebrate 190th anniversary

The oldest leathergoods brand in the world, Belgium’s Delvaux, is celebrating its 190th anniversary this year. One of the ways in which the company will mark the occasion will be the opening of its own museum in Brussels in September.

Before that, in May, it will launch a special collection inspired by Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and it will add to its limited list of stores with an opening in Rome, adding to its inauguration of its first US store, in Manhattan, in January of this year and new stores in Milan and London in 2018.

Chief executive, Jean-Marc Loubier, said in recent comments to Belgian media that 85% of Delvaux revenues come from outside its home country now, whereas, when he took over in 2011, that figure was only 3%.

Delvaux has 42 stores around the world at the moment, only six of them in Belgium, but Mr Loubier, who is French, said the company “evokes Belgian culture” in all of its international locations.

Jean-Marc Loubier, who previously worked for LVMH, eventually becoming the chief executive of Céline, bought Delvaux from previous owner, the Schwennicke family, in 2011, with the backing of the Fung family.
