Around 1,000 students from middle schools in different parts of Italy took part this year in an initiative that aims to introduce young people to the country’s leather tradition and to encourage them to think about working in the leather sector when they finish their studies.

Students aged between 11 and 14 from the provinces of Pisa, Florence, Avellino, Verona and Milan took part in the now well established programme, which is called Amici Per La Pelle (Friends for Leather). The programme also invites the students to use leather in a series of art projects.

Italy’s main tanning industry association UNIC is the driving force behind this initiative. Its representatives visited all the participating schools to talk to the young people there about leather and to donate pieces of leather from local tanneries for use in the pieces of art the students went on to create.

The February 2019 Lineapelle exhibition, which UNIC organises, devoted a space to show off the works of art the students produced for Amici Per La Pelle and encouraged exhibition visitors to vote for their favourites.

This year’s Amici Per La Pelle theme was cinema. Sophia Loren, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Clint Eastwood all featured in the works the students created, alongside a remarkable Harry Potter-themed entry, complete with a model of Hogwarts, quidditch pitch and all.
