India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) is putting in place plans to establish a new mega leather park in Vellore, in the state of Tamil Nadu, according to local media reports.

According to CLE’s proposal, the park would cover 100 acres of land and would house hundreds of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises related to the leather sector. It would also have a testing centre and a product design centre. The cost being reported is Rs 350 crore (around $50 million).

“The park will give a much-needed boost to the leather industry. The state contributes at least 40 per cent of the exports which are made from India in the leather sector and has lot of growth potential,” Israr Ahmed, CLE regional chairman for the South, was quoted as saying.

For his part, Aqeel Ahmed, the new chairman of CLE, said the Tamil Nadu state benefits from the availability of good quality raw materials, appropriate infrastructure and skilled labour. “The park will help us to increase exports from the country,” he added.
