Female artists apply their creativity to the Lady Dior bag
05/02/2019
The brand first ran this initiative in 2016. This year, it invited eleven female artists to give their interpretations of the Lady Dior bag, which was first created in 1995.
Artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri selected what Dior called “a resolutely diverse” group of women to revisit the bag. They were drawn from seven countries: Colombia, Turkey, South Korea, China, the US, France and Japan.
They were given the chance to customise every aspect of the bag including materials, colours and design features. They reinterpreted the bag in medium and mini versions.
For her medium bag design, Colombia artist Olga de Amaral covered embroidered silk and linen squares with gold leaf. Her mini version featured embroidered corked calfskin tubes. US artist Polly Apfelbaum chose to incorporate multicoloured graphic motifs, while South Korea’s Lee Bul covered the bag with rock extraction and foam. French sculptor Morgane Tschiember took her inspiration from Japanese culture, using delicate cords to tie up the bag.
