01/02/2019
At an international press conference on the opening day, newly appointed chairman of the country’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE), Aqeel Ahmed, presented details of the Indian leather industry’s performance in recent months.
He said the industry has an overall annual turnover of $17.7 billion and brought in export revenues of $5.7 billion in the most recent full financial year, which ran from April 2017-March 2018.
Mr Ahmed said that the strengths of the Indian leather industry include ready access to raw materials because the country has 20% of the global cattle herd and 11% of the world goat and sheep population.
He added that India also has a skilled workforce and up-to-date technology. Its tanneries, he insisted, are increasing their compliance with international environmental standards.
