UNIC welcomes design community’s questions

An Innovation Talks forum took place for the first time at Lineapelle London on January 22. Trend analysts, influencers, innovators, designers and materials producers presented ideas on leather’s place in the circular economy to London’s design community.

Other talks on the day included presentations on leather trends for the spring-summer 2020 fashion season, and a question-and-answer session with designers and representatives of the Italian tanning industry association, UNIC.

UNIC representatives taking part in that session included director general, Fulvia Bacchi, and vice-director general, Luca Boltri. Questions from the London designers present focused mainly on issues such as animal welfare, carbon footprint and comparisons with materials fabricated from pineapple, mushrooms and other raw materials.

Afterwards, Mr Boltri told World Leather that it was no surprise that designers should want to ask about these topics, but he said it is difficult to sum up the position of UNIC and of the global leather industry in a quick answer. “It’s very important to be open and to engage in dialogue,” he said, “but these are complicated questions and our answers need to be based on facts, on science, and it takes time to talk it all through.”

He told the designers that Italian tanners take the question of animal welfare, for example, very seriously. But he pointed out that they import raw material from 120 different countries and are trying hard to encourage good practice among all of their suppliers.
