Interest in quality hides picks up in China
The latest edition of our exclusive market intelligence report, Leather Pipeline, appeared as part of the Leatherbiz Weekly electronic newsletter on January 22.

One of the stand-out points the report makes is that tanners in China appear to have been stocking up on hides just before their holiday for Lunar New Year in early February and that, more than in previous years, have been enthusiastic in their enquiries about high-quality hides from Europe. “But they seem disappointed that neither the price they have in mind nor the volume they are looking for are easy to satisfy,” the report says.

A further boost for the leather industry in China is that there has been cold weather in recent weeks, even in southern provinces. This has led to good sales of winter shoes and boots and follow-up orders for leather from footwear manufacturers.
