The new issue of World Leather is now available
The December 2018/January 2019 issue of World Leather is now available online. The full e-zine can be accessed here.

This issue sees the return of Tannery of the Year. The seventh programme kicks off in Russia with a visit to the country’s biggest tannery, Russkaya Kozha. It has set its sights on expanding its target markets beyond the domestic arena and beyond footwear. It is investing heavily in new technology to make this possible.

There is also a look at one of Russkaya Kozha’s customers, footwear group Unichel. The Russian company has said it will not compromise on the quality of its shoes at it battles against cheaper imports. To this end, it invests heavily in leather from companies like Russkaya Kozha.

As for previous programmes, we offer readers a wider view of the leather industry in the surrounding country. Russia has 20 leather manufacturers in operation, a relatively small number for a country of its size. Industry organisation PCKO has urged tanners and footwear manufacturers to keep investing in up-to-date technology.

The magazine’s technical section includes a paper examining the important process of hide soaking and how it can be more effectively controlled in the tannery. There is also information about a technique developed by Chinese group Biosk Chemicals for processing hides to the wet blue state. Another article focuses on the determination of the pH value and the difference figure of leather.

This issue’s Beast to Beauty feature is dedicated to luxury accessories brand Laurus. Founded by a former commodities trader, it depends on the appeal of exotic leather and the expertise of Italian craftspeople to set its range of luxury leathergoods apart from the competition.
