The US Department of Agriculture’s pilot tannery at its Eastern Regional Research Center in Pennsylvania will, once again, play a central role in introducing a new cohort of people from finished product brands to leather this year.

As in previous years, the Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati will host several educational opportunities in 2019, with some of the sessions taking place at the tannery.

A popular two-day leather orientation course will begin the Leather Research Laboratory’s offering for the year. It will take place at the University of Cincinnati on April 3 and 4. “It will cover a wide range of leather related issues such as physical structure, species identification, hide supply, wet-end and finishing operations, regulations, testing and customer acceptance issues,” the course organiser said. The cost of this course is $955 per person, with a discounted price of $855 for additional participants from the same company.

Later in the year, the events will move to Pennsylvania and use of the pilot tannery will allow participants to experience hands-on learning. Subsequent courses will be in conjunction with the American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA) and use the text from an ALCA correspondence course.

“It will draw on industry experts to give participants the skills necessary to transform raw hides into one of nature’s most beautiful materials,” the Leather Research Laboratory said.

This course will take place over two weeks, with the first week (June 17-21) focusing on raw to wet blue, and the second week (July 22-25) on wet blue to crust. Cost will $1,600 for one week or $2,800 for both weeks.
