Japan imports €1 billion worth of leather bags
Figures compiled by Spanish export promotions agency ICEX show that, in 2017, Japan imported raw and processed hides with a value of €206.6 million. ICEX reported the figures around the time of the most recent Tokyo Leather Fair (December 6-7).

It commented that a decline in leather production in Japan has led to an increase in imports of the material.

The market in Japan for imported finished products made from leather is substantially stronger. For bags alone, ICEX put the figure for 2017 at just over €1 billion.

It said the new economic agreement between Japan and the European Union, which could come into force in early 2019, makes it optimistic that European exports of leather products to Japan can increase substantially over time. However, with it taking a further 16 years to eliminate all tariffs and quotas in place on trade between the EU and Japan, the benefits for European leathergoods brands exporting to Japan will take time to filter through.
