Two more Brazilian tanneries sign up for CSCB programme

17/12/2018
Brazilian tanning industry body CICB has confirmed that the total number of leather manufacturers across the country to have signed up for its CSCB sustainability certification programme has now reached 27.

The latest tanneries to join the CSCB programme are Curtume J. Kempe from Presidente Prudente in São Paulo and Indústria de Peles Versatto, from Novo Hamburgo in Rio Grande do Sul.

CICB set the certification programme up in 2012 and published standards for it in 2014. Detailed criteria cover four “dimensions of sustainability” that the programme has identified: sustainability management, as well as economic, environmental and social aspects.

There are four levels of certification that tanners can achieve, depending on how many of the criteria they fulfil. Provided they meet at least 50% of the indicators, they can earn a bronze certification. Silver is for those meeting 75%, gold 90% and diamond 100% of the criteria.

In the course of 2018, three Brazilian tanneries completed the programme and received CSCB certification. Fuga Couros achieved a silver award in January 2018 and, two months later, Curtume Courovale achieved a gold award. Then, in October, Mats Beneficiamento de Couros also achieved a gold award.
