Abiec projects positive year for Brazilian beef in 2019

Industry association Abiec has predicted that 2019 will be a record year for Brazilian beef exports.

From 2019, the number of Brazilian packer plants with authorisation to export beef to China will increase. According to Abiec, this could help the industry boost exports by more than 10%, reaching levels of around 1.8 million tonnes in volume and $7.2 billion in value.

Projected beef export figures for 2018 are 1.6 million tonnes in volume and $6.5 billion in value.

At the moment, only 15 packing plants are authorised to export beef from Brazil to China, but Chinese animal health officials have completed visits to plants in different parts of Brazil and Abiec has said it is hopeful that as many as ten further facilities could receive the go-ahead in the first half of 2019.

Exports to the Chinese market in 2018 are likely to reach around 330,000 tonnes this year, with a value of $1.5 billion. Adding ten meat packing plants to the list of facilities approved for export could take these figures to 430,000 tonnes in volume and $1.8 billion in value in 2019, Abiec has said.

Other overseas markets Abiec is optimistic about for 2019 are the US and Russia. Animal health authorities in Brazil believe they have been able to give the US authorities all the reassurances they need to reopen the market there to Brazilian exports, following a halt to shipments in 2017. Russia also closed its market to Brazilian beef in 2017 but recently reauthorised five packing plants to start shipping beef there again in 2019.
