Passenger car construction in Germany falls by 9%
12/12/2018
Between January and October 2018, German car makers collectively produced just over 4.8 million passenger cars. Compared to the same months in 2017, this represents a decline of 9%.
More than 3.7 million of those vehicles went for export, which means original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) shipped 8% fewer cars to overseas markets in the January-October period in 2018 than in the same period last year.
Figures for the month of November 2018 appear to show an even steeper decline. Estimates suggest production figures for the month of 450,500 passenger cars, decline of 22% compared to November 2017. However, VDA pointed out that in November last year car production was at an all-time high of 581,200 units, partly because of what it called “the timing of inventories”.
At the same time, German OEMs have increased the volume of passenger cars they make outside Germany. The figure for the first ten months of this year was 9.3 million vehicles, a rise of 6%.
