A joint initiative run by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the government of Italy and the HP Foundation is helping talented young people in Tunisia become entrepreneurs.

Tunisia’s unemployment rate is around 40% and university graduates make up one-third of unemployed people. With the support of the joint initiative, called Mashrou3i (‘My Project’ in Arabic) many young people to turn to entrepreneurship as a solution. As a consequence, a small, but influential start-up community has sprung up in Tunisia.

Mashrou3i launched in 2016 when almost 3,500 entrepreneurs and students in 14 vulnerable regions completed entrepreneurship training. In addition, 145 entrepreneurs received coaching, and 11 enterprises took advantage of business development assistance.

The programme has already produced 849 jobs, with almost 200 of those at start-up businesses, 42% of them run by women.
