Romanian furniture body expresses concern about labour shortage

06/12/2018
The Romanian Furniture Manufacturers Association (APMR) has complained that companies there are finding it hard to hang on to skilled employees and, as a result, the overall workforce of the furniture industry in Romania decreased in 2017.

According to the association, many trained employees have left Romania because they are able to earn much higher wages in other parts of Europe.

This development has come at a time when Romania’s furniture exports reached €550 million in value; this is the figure for the industry’s total export revenues in 2017. More than 80% of all the furniture produced in Romania goes for export at the moment.

Specialist Milan-based furniture industry market research provider CSIL has said leading European brands such as Polipol, Natuzzi, Parisot and Rom have set up factories in Romania in recent years. It said Natuzzi established its subsidiary there, Italsofa, more than 15 years ago and now employs more than 1,000 people in Romania and generates 15% of its revenue there.

APMR has said it is worried a shortage of labour may affect the success of these manufacturers.
