Pakistan: leather research body working with universities

The director of Pakistan’s Leather Research Centre (LRC), Dr Hafiz Rabb Nawaz, has said the centre, which provides testing and research services and training to tanners, has signed a series of agreements with universities around the country.

He said these universities are making their laboratory facilities available for leather researchers to carry out new investigative projects into subjects such as enzyme technology, new methods for dyeing and the production of new, vegetable-based fatliquor.

Dr Hafiz said the LRC is ready to assist the leather industry in new product development and also in areas such as waste management.

There is a consensus among research and scientific bodies in Pakistan that new investment in research is essential for tanners there to add value to their export offerings.
