Shoe groups launch footwear PEFCR initiative

04/12/2018
European footwear industry bodies have relaunched their efforts to set up a reliable method for setting up product environmental footprint category rules (PEFCR) for shoes.

In April 2018, COTANCE successfully steered the leather industry in Europe to formal recognition that leather is an environmentally friendly product when the European Commission approved its PEFCR for leather.

A group of companies in the footwear sector have now launched a new project, LIFEGreenShoes4All, led by Portuguese Footwear Technology centre (CTCP), the European Footwear Confederation (CEC) and other project partners, aiming to establish PEFCR specifically for shoes. They have secured co-funding from the European Commission.

Among its objectives, the project will seek to make environmental labels fairer and easier for consumers to understand. Project partners have also said they believe they can create “new green jobs” and move European shoe companies’ business models towards a circular economy.
