Senate steps in to save CTC from budget cuts

The French senate has blocked a government plan to lower the budget that leather industry research and training organisation CTC receives from the state.

In September, the Lyon-based organisation expressed concern over a government proposal to reduce its funding for 2019 by €820,000. As part of its proposed budget for next year, the French government said it wants to cut a total of €10 million from the funding it grants to the technical institutions dedicated to a number of different industries in France, with the leather and footwear body’s share of that cut amounting to €820,000.

However, at the end of November, the Senate, the upper house of the French Parliament, blocked the proposal.

Leather industry organisation, the Conseil National du Cuir, welcomed the Senate’s action and said it amounted to “a strong message of support” for the small and medium-sized enterprises that make up the leather industry in France.
