Trumpler says its work on COD-friendly products is ‘promising’

Product communication and promotion manager at leather chemicals manufacturer Trumpler, Dr Jeffry Guthrie-Strachan, has said the company is currently working on a range of “COD-friendly” products and believes it will be able to bring them to market in the near future.

Speaking in Arzignano at the tenth AICC regional convention for Veneto on November 23, Dr Guthrie-Strachan explained that tanners across the globe want to achieve low COD (chemical oxygen demand), but warned that products that offer this while containing low levels of active matter may be unable to provide the functionality they need in the leather-making process.

He also warned that making amendments to beamhouse processes, which is a logical place to focus on because most COD comes from beamhouse operations, is much more likely to “transfer the COD to other parts of production” than remove it. What Trumpler is trying to develop is a range of products that work but that will genuinely help leather manufacturers lower COD.

Thanks to what he called a group effort at Trumpler and two years of work, he said “COD-friendly” fatliquors and tanning agents could come to market. He said: “There is a long way to go, but the results we have obtained so far are promising.”
