Argentina and US to agree beef trade deal

Argentina’s international trade secretary, Marisa Bircher, has told news agency Reuters that the US is close to agreeing a new two-way deal on beef exports with the South American country.

It’s 17 years since Argentina was able to export beef to the US and 19 years since any beef shipments went the other way, but Ms Bircher told Reuters that “all technical and administrative questions have been settled” and that she hoped for a reopening of trade in days rather than weeks.

Argentina produced 2.8 million tonnes of beef and veal in 2017, with 293,000 tonnes of that total going overseas. In the same year, the US produced 11.9 million tonnes of and exported 1.3 million tonnes. There will be a limit of 20,000 tonnes on the volume of beef Argentina can ship to the US each year. The South American country’s ministry for agribusiness has said most of what packers ship to the US is likely to be lean beef for making hamburgers.
