Industrial group Tata has won an international award for its programme of encouraging team members to take part in voluntary community initiatives. The group won the global volunteering award at the 2018 International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) Awards, presented in Augsburg in Germany.

Employees of the 58 companies that make up the Tata Group have contributed more than 1.1 million hours of volunteering during 2018, it has said.

The leather and leather products business unit of Tata International has contributed to this wider effort. In Dewas, where the company runs its main tannery, volunteers have helped run health and hygiene camps at various local schools, helped clean up the Kshipra River, donated a Braille machine to a  school for visually impaired children, distributed clothes to people in disadvantaged communities, planted trees and taken part in community sports events.

Initiatives in Chennai, where Tata International runs a finished leather products factory, have included donating food and clothing to a local orphanage, mentoring sessions, sports, art and public speaking competitions for local schools, and an eye health clinic for children.
