UNIDO lends a hand to South Sudan’s meat industry
More than 100 stakeholders from South Sudan’s meat processing industry recently took part in training activities organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). They were designed to improve food security and boost the income of the rural population in the Greater Bahr El Ghazal region.

The aim was to give local people the skills and tools to produce high-quality meat for local consumption and high-quality hides and skins for international markets.

Training included new slaughtering, flaying and de-fleshing techniques, as well as information about how to better preserve hides and skins. The participants were also given items such as knives, aprons, safety boot and wheelbarrows to assist them in their work.

These activities in South Sudan form part of a larger EU-funded UNIDO project to enhance local value addition and strengthen agro-value chains.
