The chief executive of automotive group the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, Carlos Ghosn, has been detained by police in Japan for allegedly reporting inaccurately details of his earnings to Japanese financial authorities.

Commentators have suggested Mr Ghosn, one of the most influential figures in the global automotive industry, is likely to lose his position in the coming days.

Mr Ghosn’s arrest has also cast doubt on the future of the alliance, which achieved sales of 10.6 million vehicles in 2017.
